Rackspace offers UK DevOps engineer team to support business cloud deployments

Says number of DevOps posts has increased

Article comments

Cloud capacity and services company Rackspace has put together a UK DevOps engineer team to help companies set up and support their cloud infrastructures, amid a shortage of talent on the market.

Rackspace said the number of permanent DevOps engineer posts in the UK has jumped 350 percent in the past two years, with average salaries increasing 16 percent, "demonstrating a huge growth in demand for DevOps talent", Rackspace said.

DevOps integrates the combined roles of both developers and operations teams in order to improve collaboration and productivity. By automating infrastructure, workflows and continuously measuring application performance, DevOps has become an important business process.

According to the Office for National Statistics, the average UK salary of a DevOps engineer increased from £47,500 in 2012 to £55,000 in 2014, far outpacing the increase in average national earnings.

Rackspace said the top technology skills DevOps engineers currently need are Linux, Puppet, Chef, Python and Rub, according to job adverts for the position in the six months to March 2014.

In late 2013, Rackspace launched its global DevOps Automation Service, based in the US. The service is designed to help developers automate the process of deploying and scaling hybrid cloud infrastructures. Rackspace is now augmenting its global DevOps operation and establishing a specialist UK DevOps Automation Team to offer practical advice on business cloud deployments.

Toby Owen, head of technical product strategy at Rackspace International, said: "Businesses have never been more interested in DevOps and how they can be more innovative and agile. DevOps and cloud are strong allies for organisations who are looking to unlock meaningful efficiency gains."
