WAN optimisation vendor targets VMWare virtual machines
NetEx software accelerates VMotion transfers

As the industry meets at VMworld, one WAN optimisation player is highlighting its ability to accelerate a key feature of VMware-virtualised environments.
NetEx makes the HyperIP family of products, which are designed to speed the performance of third-party business continuity and disaster recovery applications, such as remote data replication, backup/restore and large file transfers.
The Minneapolis-based vendor (which was launched in 1999 as a spin-off of StorageTek) offers a version of HyperIP that operates on a VMware ESX server to mitigate TCP performance issues that crop up when moving stored data over WAN connections.

In particular, NetEx’s HyperIP for VMware is geared for optimising VMotion transfers over wide distances. VMotion is VMware’s technology for migrating virtual machines from one physical server to another, without impacting users.
HyperIP for VMware solves distance problems associated with VMotion, the company says, by accelerating the transfer of live VMotion images between VMware virtual machines over existing WAN connections. Latency has made it challenging to migrate virtual machines over long distances in past industry tests, NetEx says.
HyperIP for VMware is optimised for long-distance data migration and can mitigate performance degradation due to network latency and packet loss, the company says. Just how well? NetEx says its software can speed throughput by 600%.
One customer using NetEx HyperIP for VMware is hosting and development firm Code Zero.

HyperIP plays a critical role in this success by supercharging data movement applications under VMware,” said David Reddaway, president at Code Zero, in a statement.
HyperIP for VMware runs on a VMware ESX Server platform to boost the performance of storage replication and migration applications from companies such as EMC, NetApp, FalconStor, Symantec, IBM and Data Domain.
