New tool shows virtualisation power savings

Logicalis shows ways to reduce carbon footprint

Article comments

IT systems supplier Logicalis has announced its IT Carbon and Power Consumption Calculator, a tool showing power consumption and carbon emissions before and after virtualisation.

The tool is only for US-based IT users. Users enter the state location of their data centre, followed by the numbers of PCs, servers, blade servers, enterprise and mid-range arrays, enterprise storage switches and network devices in their organisation. The tool then calculates their annual energy usage, assuming 24x7 operation and average energy rates gleaned from Logicalis' own experience. The associated carbon emissions are calculated using US Department of Statistics conversion rates.

It also calculates your annual energy costs: by entering in a parallel column on the web form the number of virtualised devices in each category you can see the energy savings, in kilowatt hours and in dollars, and the, lowered, carbon emissions. The tool then calculates the percentage annualised energy savings and the amount of cash (dollars) involved.

It provides a simple to operate and averaged calculation that is guaranteed to reveal savings if virtualisation is used. A test run we made revealed 79 percent savings with less than half our 60 servers and 300 PCs virtualised.

Eric Linxweiler, a Logicalis SVP, said: "We knew the numbers would be surprising to many IT executives and we wanted to provide a simple method for estimating power consumption and the related potential savings for organisations."

Users of the tool are recommended to contact Logicalis for a more detailed assessment, one based on an audit of their IT estate, and, we expect, to find out what the implementation of virtualised IT kit would cost, an aspect that the tool does not address.
