Backup merger fuses Yosemite with Barracuda

Vendors decide to back each other.

Barracuda Networks has swallowed Yosemite Technologies to enhance the capabilities of its data backup product, the company has announced.

With the addition of software agents from Yosemite, Barracuda can offer incremental backups of applications such as Microsoft Exchange Server and SQL Server, as well as Windows system states, said Stephen Pao, vice president of product management at Barracuda.

The Yosemite software also adds administrative options such as configuration, policy and reporting, he said.

The new features have already been integrated for no additional charge into the Barracuda Backup Server, which is now part of the Barracuda Backup Service. Barracuda Backup Service combines the on-site Barracuda Backup Server with online data stores for local and remote backup and restoration.

The deal between the two privately held companies took place late last year but was announced on Tuesday, along with the enhanced product. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Barracuda specialises in email and web security appliances. Its former backup offering was an agentless product that customers typically used with third-party software such as the Windows NT Backup and Restore utility, Pao said.

The company will continue to develop and sell the Yosemite Backup software for servers and Yosemite FileKeeper for desktops and laptops, making them the first products in a line called BarracudaWare, he said. The Yosemite business will remain as a division of Barracuda.

Yosemite made its name with the TapeWare backup software, which has shipped with many tape storage systems, and acquired FileKeeper in 2007. It is based in Sunnyvale, California, and has a research and development facility in Fresno, California, which Barracuda said it will maintain.

Barracuda is based in Campbell, California, and claims about 70,000 customers, including Coca-Cola, IBM and Harvard University.
