London and Seoul hailed the most technological cities in the world

PwC's index on Cities of Opportunity saw London rise seven places to take the top spot

London and South Korea's Seoul are the world's most technological cities, according to a PwC study tracking the development of the world’s 30 leading cities.

PwC’s Cities of Opportunity reinforced London's growing reputation as a global tech hub, jumping from eighth place for technology readiness in last year’s report to joint first with the South Korean capital this year.

London gained top marks for software and multimedia development and design and came second overall for broadband quality (a rise of 12 places on 2013), and ranked third behind Singapore and Seoul for internet access in schools.

David Snell, PwC partner, said: “What’s particularly interesting this year is the city’s growing digital reputation. There’s no doubt that this is linked to London’s impressive performance across indicators on education, technology access, skills and ease of doing business.”

London also ranked first overall, elbowing New York off the top of the podium for the first time.

The UK capital rose two places from third place last year, beating New York by a large margin followed by Singapore, Toronto and San Francisco, PwC found.

The report considered economic clout, reputation as an urban gateway, access to technology and design and development capabilities.

“London’s reputation as an economic powerhouse is well established, and reinforced when you consider it is the second most successful city in the Index for attracting foreign direct investment,” added Snell.

Earlier this year, Mayor of London Boris Johnson hailed the the city he represents as the future technology capital of the world.
