Former Accenture consultants raise £3.5m for house cleaning service Hassle.com

Helps customers find a local cleaner online and make a booking in minutes

Three former Accenture consultants announced today that they have raised $6 million (£3.5 million) for Hassle.com, a website launched 18 months ago that allows people to discover nearby cleaners.

Hassle, run out of an office in Vauxhall, London, is designed to help people find local, trusted cleaners online and make a booking in a few minutes.

Customers type in their postcode in order to browse through cleaner profiles and customer reviews, before shortlisting the cleaner which “best suits their needs”. All cleaners charge a flat rate of £10 per hour.

Hassle said it will use the funding, which comes from Facebook-backer Accel Patners, to expand the London-focused website to other major cities in the UK and Europe.

Hassle CEO Alex Depledge said: “We connect people who love cleaning with people who don’t have time to do it.

“We don’t offer people a ‘standard clean’ as traditional agencies do as we recognise city goers are particular about their homes and have all manner of cleaning quirks. Our platform is geared so that our cleaners’ profiles can easily showcase their expertise making it easy for our customers to find their perfect match.”

Depledge co-founded the company in March 2012 with Accenture colleagues Jules Coleman and Tom Nimmo, before growing it through the TechStars accelerator program.

The trio’s rapid rise to success reflects a growing number of London-based founders spinning out their own start-ups having worked at many of the city's leading corporations.

Accel Partners, one of Silicon Valley’s best-known venture capital funds after backing firms like Groupon and Spotify, said it has been impressed by the strength of the company's founders and their passion for building a "simple and exciting" service for cleaners and consumers.

Philippe Botteri, partner at Accel Partners, said: "The momentum since launch has been staggering and we are very excited to support Hassle’s fast expansion across the UK and Europe.”

The multi-billion dollar marketplace for home cleaning services is quickly emerging as a key area for digital companies.

Hassle competitor HomeJoy, based in Silicon Valley, has raised $40 million (£23 million) to date, while UK rivals like Mopp have launched in the past 12 months.
