Police charge more UK Anonymous hacking suspects

Alleged DDoS hacktivists to face court

A further two men have been charged by British police with offences in connection with DDoS attacks carried out by the Anonymous hacktivist group.

Christopher Jan Weatherhead, 20, from Northampton, and Ashley Rhodes, 26, from London, have been charged with “Conspiracy to do an unauthorised act in relation to a computer,” and have been remanded pending a bail hearing on 7 September.

Earlier this week Peter David Gibson, 22, from Hartlepool, and an unnamed 17-year old were also charged in connection with Anonymous attacks and a 16-year old was referred to the Surrey Youth Justice Board.

The police haven’t detailed the crimes five stand accused of, but the assumption is that it relates to attacks against UK targets. That could include the DDoS on the website of the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), which took place in June, and possibly also a similar attack on the website of the British Phonographic Industry in September 2010.

The number of people arrested in the UK in connection with hacktivist attacks lengthens and on the face of it does seem to be having some effect; the number of serious attacks has declined as the arrests have piled up.

Others believe that potential targets are simply taking more care over their defences.
