Nokia beefs up firewall with quad-core chips

More bang for your bucks.

Nokia has added a new appliance to its network security range that has more processing muscle - the first product to come out of its collaboration with Intel.

The IP2450 is intended for large enterprises and service providers doing high-end network monitoring. It features two quad-core Intel processors.

Running Check Point Software Technologies' SecureXL VPN (virtual private network) and firewall software, the appliance can handle as much as 9 Gbit/s of traffic using Nokia’s IPSO 6.O OS. Adding two Nokia Accelerated Data Path (ADP) cards boosts throughput to 20 Gbit/s.

The IP2450 can also run Check Point’s CoreXL software, as well as Check Point’s VPN-1 Unified Threat Management (UTM) suite, which includes firewall, VPN, antivirus, uniform resource locator (URL) filtering and intrusion prevention capabilities or the Check Point VPN-1 Power applications.

The IP2450 is available now through Nokia's channel partners. Pricing can vary depending on the channel partner’s relationship with Nokia, but a call to one vendor in London quoted £31,000 ($62,000) for the appliance, plus £7,500 for one year of 24-hour support.
