Raspberry Pi Model A finally launches for $25

Meets promised price tag with lower-specced Pi

Article comments

The Raspberry Pi Foundation’s dream of a $25 computer for all has come true at last with the news that the original and cheaper Model A board has gone on sale in Europe.

Listing on element1 for £19.03, the Welsh-made Model A halves the Model B’s RAM to only 256MB, and comes with only one USB port and no integrated Ethernet.

Launching a less capable version of the Raspberry Pi might sound odd but as well as shaving the price the simpler board also uses about a third as much power, useful for certain kinds of project.

“[It] is of key importance to those of you wanting to run projects from a battery or solar power: robots, sensor platforms in remote locations, Wi-Fi repeaters attached to the local bus stop and so forth,” announced the Foundation’s blog.

It is also, let us recall, how the project was originally framed.

“We are very, very pleased to finally be able to offer you a computer for $25. It’s what we said we’d do all along, and we can’t wait to see what you do with it,” said the Foundation’s blog.

Customers ordering the board outside Europe can do so now via RS Components and Premier Farnell but there will be a shipping delay, the blog stated.

Last month, the Foundation said it had sold almost a million Raspberry Pis (overwhelmingly Model Bs). Last week, Google announced it would buy 15,000 more to channel to UK schools as a way of boosting interest in harder-edged (i.e. programming-oriented) ICT.
