Intel and Netgear to demo PC/television networking

Otellini expected to unveil device in CES keynote

Intel CEO and President Paul Otellini will likely unveil a device that links computers with televisions over a wireless network during his keynote presentation at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The upcoming device is a "digital convergence product" that was jointly developed by Intel and Netgear, said Chris Geiser, a product marketing manager in Netgear's home and consumer products group, during a press conference at CES.

While Geiser didn't disclose details of the product, he showed off a presentation slide with details of Otellini's keynote speech and a picture of an LCD television playing a movie.

One possibility is that Otellini will show off Push 2 TV, an as-yet-unreleased adapter developed by Netgear that uses Intel's Wireless Display technology to wirelessly connect laptops with TVs so users can watch high-definition videos and other content, according to reports.

However, there are some limitations to the content that users can view using Push 2 TV. Wireless Display uses an unprotected link to connect the adapter with a laptop, which means that users cannot stream movies stored on copy-protected DVDs and Blu-ray Discs, according to a copy of the Push2TV manual.

In addition, the adapter will only work with laptops running Intel's Core i3, i5 and i7 processors and Windows 7, according to the manual.
