Facebook site down

Web site broken, not due to hack attack

Facebook confirmed Monday what some users have been noticing for the past few days: its site is having problems.

The issues have included disappearing content, difficulties logging on, being unable to view profiles, and error messages when posting content.

"We are working to resolve these issues as soon as possible," Facebook said in a brief message at its Help Centre.

The problems resulted from internal issues rather than a hacking incident like the one that affected Twitter, Facebook and some other sites early last month.

"We started experiencing issues this morning because of database and caching problems. We have a team of engineers working to restore the fast and reliable experience users have come to expect from Facebook," the company said in a statement sent via e-mail.

Last week Facebook said its membership had passed 300 million, and that the company became cash-flow positive during the last quarter, something it hadn't expected to achieve until next year.

As its user base continues to grow, Facebook faces "fun and important challenges" like making its site perform faster and more efficiently, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a blog post.

downrightnow.com appears to be down right now as well! :)

It's been our experience that Facebook is often slow to acknowledge service disruptions. That's one reason we launched downrightnow, a service that collects user reports and monitors official announcements to detect service trouble at popular web sites. If you're still having trouble with Facebook, you can stop by at http://downrightnow.com/facebook to report an issue and see what others are saying.

i find it slightly disconcerting that i am actually upset that i can't log in to facebook. perhaps this involuntary break from it will do me the world of good.

Dan: you may want to readjust your tinfoil hat there. It seems precariously perched and I fear that it might slip off unexpectedly.

I wonder if you were to look at all the users who could not log in over the last WEEK and see if you could discern their political viewpoints. I wonder if this is an effort - pre-health care vote to silent the right???

This is getting annoying. Ready to head back to MySpace. Login is simple and more entertaining.

facebook is losing content, is nearly impossible to log onto and is slow when it does work. It's getting to be a real pain.
