Virgin Media touts 3 million Underground Wi-Fi sessions

Virgin Media sees plenty of use despite behind schedule rollout

Virgin Media has announced its London Underground Wi-Fi network has delivered nearly three million online sessions.

The firm put the Wi-Fi internet network in place for the London 2012 Olympic Games and since then 2.7 million online sessions have been delivered. Virgin Media said a session consists of sending a tweet, an email or visiting a website.

Since the Olympic Games started on 27 July, Virgin Media has seen 43,932 registrations for the service which is currently free to anyone. This takes the registrations to a total of nearly 350,000 with users on device including smartphones, tablet and laptops.

Virgin Media has seen nearly 15 million online sessions via the Underground Wi-Fi since the service went live early in June. The firm said its busiest day so far was 31 July which saw 643,013 sessions.

The internet service is now live at 72 London Underground stations, a little off the target of 80 before the games started. It is still Virgin Media's plan to extend the Wi-Fi access to 120 stations by the end of 2012.

Meanwhile BT has reached its target of 500,000 Wi-Fi hotspots available across London for the Olympics.
