Packeteer shapes up for games and IM

Microsoft traffic gets throttled.

Packeteer has released software updates to let its WAN optimisation gear control instant messaging, video and online gaming.

Designed to help control recreational traffic on school networks, the three plug-ins target Xbox Live, MSN Instant Messenger, video and BitTorrent peer-to-peer traffic, the company said.

The software is available for PacketShaper and iShaper devices, which streamline traffic across WAN links using compression, traffic shaping, and TCP optimisation.

Once the devices identify traffic types, they can enforce policies to limit bandwidth available and enforce priorities to different applications.

The new plug-ins are available now and are part of standard software for PacketShaper and iShaper. Current customers with service contracts will receive the plug-ins as part of a software upgrade.
