EE has announced that its 4G LTE network now covers 50 percent of the UK's population.

The mobile network has switched on 4G LTE broadband in 13 more towns and cities across the UK bringing the total to 50. The firm has achieved this five months after launching the network which is still the only 4G one available in the UK.

Olaf Swantee, CEO of EE, said: "With these major milestones of 50 towns and cities and 50 percent of the population, we're remaining ahead of our schedule to equip UK consumers and businesses with 4G. Our customers are at the heart of our rollout,"

The new places across the UK which are now live with 4G are: Bradford, Bingley, Doncaster, Dudley, Harpenden, Leicester, Lichfield, Loughborough, Luton, Reading, Shipley, St Albans and West Bromwich.

EE said it is committed to launching 4G in further 30 towns and cities, bringing the total to 80, by the end of June 2013. The firm plans to reach 70 percent of the UK's population by the end of this year and 98 percent by the end of 2014.

Customers are seeing average speeds of more than 16Mbps and peak speeds of 50mbps on a regular basis, the firm said.

Rival networks from O2 and Vodafone are expected this summer but Three is taking a different approach. It has confirmed it will deliberately wait for other networks to launch before it delivers its offering.

Three is happy with its DC-HSDPA Ultrafast network to is in no rush to upgrade to 4G.
