UK mobile network 'The People's Operator' donates quarter of profits to charity

Ten percent of customers' call, text and data spend will also be directed to a good cause

A new mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) has launched in the UK that allows customers to donate a portion of their phone bill to an organisation or charity of their choice.

The People's Operator (TPO) operates in the same way as any other mobile network, offering a variety of call, text and data packages. However, 10 percent of customers' call, text and data spend will be directed to a good cause.

TPO claims that the service gives customers the opportunity to support their favourite causes and receive updates on how their money is being spent, while businesses can fulfil their corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitments.

The company will also donate 25 percent of its own profits to charities, community groups and other good causes, such as the NSPCC, the Trussell Trust, ChildLine, Islington Giving, Regenerate, and Claxton House.

“The People’s Operator represents a fundamental shift in the way commercial utilities support communities and causes,” said Andrew Rosenfeld, chair and co-founder of TPO. “The more profit that is generated, the more we can pass on to deserving parts of society.”

TPO is based in the UK, with management and customer service teams in London. It is privately funded by AIRNET, a UK registered company wholly owned by Andrew Rosenfeld, who formerly chaired of the NSPCC FULL STOP campaign.

Sir Christopher Kelly, chair of the Committee on Standards in Public Life and chair of the King’s Fund, and Kevin Curley CBE, former chief executive of NAVCA (National Association for Voluntary and Community Action) and trustee of CFG (Charity Finance Group), are also founding trustees.

While the company has not revealed which mobile network it is running on, TPO is expected to use EE, which operates the Orange and T-Mobile infrastructure. EE is currently the only operator in the UK to offer 4G services.

At launch, TPO is only offering pay-as-you-go (PAYG) deals. UK calls on the network will cost 12.5p per minute, texts 7.5p, and data costs 12.5p per megabyte. Calls and texts to other TPO customers are free.
