Nokia cuts price of smartphones in Europe ahead of Lumia 920 launch

Prices have dropped by as much as 15%

Nokia has cut the price of its Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 smartphones by about 15% and 10% respectively during the past month, according to British research firm CCS Insight.

The news comes as the Finnish phone maker prepares for the European launch of its new Lumia 820 and 920 devices in November.

UK pricing for the new Lumia models has not yet been announced, but figures announced elsewhere in Europe indicate that the 920 will retail for slightly less than the recently released Apple iPhone 5.

The 920 will be available in Italy for €599 (£477) and the lower-end 820 will cost €499 (£398). In Germany, the 920 will retail at €649 (£517). By comparison, the iPhone retails in Europe at around £540. Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S3 costs around £450.

These prices could be regarded as relatively steep by consumers, given that the Windows Phone operating system has a long way to go to catch up with Apple iOS and Google Android in the marketplace.

“Windows Phone is still largely an unknown to consumers – they would probably expect to pay less if they are taking a risk,” said Ovum analyst Nick Dillon.
