Virgin Media Wi-Fi live at 41 London Underground stations

Free London underground internet access extended

Virgin Media has made more London underground stations live with Wi-Fi internet access taking the total to 41.

The free Wi-Fi became available at the beginning of June and is now available at a third of planned stations including Tower Hill, Paddington and Canary Wharf. Virgin Media aims to provide Wi-Fi at 120 stations by the end of the year.

Kevin Baughan, Director of Metro Wireless at Virgin Media, said: "Londoners and visitors are loving our new Wi-Fi service and we're on track to connect Tube journeys right across London ahead of the Games.

"With millions of smartphones, gadgets and devices taken on to the Tube each day, the demand for data continues to grow and we're rolling-out a future-proofed service that makes superfast wireless connections the standard."

During the first four weeks of the service going live, Virgin Media saw 100,000 users. The firm said one million tweets, Facebook posts, emails and web pages were delivered in the space of a week.

The service will be free to anyone during the London 2012 Olympic Games, after which it will be restricted to Virgin Media customers. Non Virgin Media customers will still get free access to live travel news, Time Out, Spotify and MyMovies.net.

Gareth Powell, director of strategy at London Underground said: "Wi-Fi at Tube stations is proving extremely popular with our customers. Millions of commuters and visitors from around the world are now able to keep up with live travel updates, news and entertainment throughout an incredible summer and beyond.

"We look forward to continuing the roll-out and connecting up to 120 London Underground stations in 2012."
