Nokia claims Google Nexus 7 infringes Wi-Fi patents

Troubled mobile giant seeks IP income

Crisis ridden Nokia has claimed that the Google Nexus 7 tablet infringes its patents.

The Nexus 7, Google's first own-brand tablet made by Asus, hasn't launched yet but already is under fire. The Finnish Windows Phone device maker claims that the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean tablet infringes a patent relating to its 802.11 Wi-Fi, according the The Inquirer.

Nokia said: "Nokia has more than 40 licensees, mainly for its standards essential patent portfolio, including most of the mobile device manufacturers. Neither Google nor Asus is licensed under our patent portfolio."

"Companies who are not yet licensed under our standard essential patents should simply approach us and sign up for a license." added Nokia.

Nokia said that neither Google nor Asus is licensed to use the technology. Asus declined to comment on the issue.

Nokia's announcemed last month that it will lay off 10,000 workers by the end of next year to cut annual operating costs by an additional €1.6 billion (US$2 billion) doesn't surprise analysts.

The Nexus 7 is available to pre-order from £159 and sports a 7in ISP display and nVidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor. The tablet has a release date of 19 July online and 27 July in stores.
