Juniper sharpens up mobile delivery
New offerings for the New Network

Juniper Networks has set up a new division to explore new opportunities in what the company calls ‘New Network' demands.
The new group,. Junos Ready Software, is to offer service providers a means of delivering a new range of software and services. The group will build on Juniper's own Junos operating system, which includes an SDK, for the development of application, and is already set to provide several components including Project Falcon, which was originally announced in October 2009, a programme that is focused on delivering mobile applications on Junos. Other components will include Junos Space, a platform for the development and deployment of simple, smart network applications.
Juniper announced its New Network vision at the end of last year when Juniper CEO, Kevin Johnson, said that the New Network was "based on smart systems, open software platforms and an approach that adapts to changing business dynamics by embracing partnerships and unleashing innovation." The announcement of Junos Ready Software is set to bring mobile operators into that dynamic.
The company has already announced three products in the new strategy. The first product under Juniper's Project Falcon is Traffic Direct, combining subscriber and application policy software with Juniper's MX 3D Ethernet edge routers. Traffic Direct has been designed to reduce network congestion by removing bulk traffic from smartphones.
Late last year, O2 apologised after its network had been swamped by smart devices and commentators have already suggested that the iPad will cause more congestion.Traffic Direct, is expected to be available in the second quarter.
The second new product is Juniper Media Flow, also expected to be available in the second quarter. has been designed to optimise networks for efficient video delivery to smartphones by applying adaptive bit streaming for uninterrupted video viewing.
In other news, Juniper has also signed a deal with Hiatchi for the Japanese company to build on Juniper's Junos SDK to provide specialised applications within Japan.
