CRC scheme: 300 organisations miss registration date
Environment Agency has not issued any fines yet

Around 300 organisations are still completing their registration for the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme, nearly a fortnight after the deadline for registration passed.
UK organisations using large amounts of energy had until the end of September to register with the CRC energy-efficiency scheme.
According to the Environment Agency, it was approached by around 300 organisations before the 30 September deadline. However, despite warnings of financial penalties being imposed for organisations not meeting the deadline, the agency said it had not charged anyone yet.

Eligible organisations who did not register by the deadline were expected to be fined £5,000, plus an additional £500 per day for each subsequent working day they failed to register, up to a maximum of 80 working days.
Participants of the CRC scheme are organisations that consumed at least 6,000 megawatt hours of electricity through all of their meters during 2008, which is equivalent to an electricity bill of around £500,000, and are required to participate in the scheme by monitoring their energy consumption and purchasing allowances.
As of 11 October, 2,780 scheme participants and 11,217 corporate information declarers and 1,180 non-corporate information declarers had registered for the scheme. The Environment Agency has previously said that it expected around 20,000 organisations in total to sign up.
A spokesperson for the agency said: “Between them these organisations have reported over 90 percent of the electricity consumption expected to be included within the scheme.”
Nevertheless, the Environment Agency said that it will be investigating any half-hourly meters that have not been accounted for, and urged businesses that have not already signed up to the CRC scheme to do so.

Last month, experts had warned that signing up to the scheme could take weeks. The scheme came into effect on 1 April 2010.
