Amazon Web Services adds Rio and Taipei to its content delivery network

Amazon now has 51 edge locations around the world

Article comments

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced today that is has launched two new edge locations in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Taipei, Taiwan, that will allow users in the regions to benefit from lower latency levels.

AWS sets up edge locations to deliver content from data centres closer to its end users.

“This is our first edge location in Taiwan and our second edge location in Brazil (joining São Paulo),” said AWS chief evangelist, Jeff Barr, in a blog post. “These new locations will improve performance and availability for end users of applications being served by CloudFront and Route 53 and bring the total number of AWS edge locations to 51 worldwide.”

AWS said the new edge locations will support all the features associated with Amazon CloudFront and Amazon Route 53.

Amazon CloudFront is designed to help businesses accelerate their website, stream media, and deliver security features like custom SSL certificates, private content, and geo-restriction of content. Meanwhile, Amazon Route 53 offers health checks, DNS failover, and latency-based routing.

AWS said the pricing for the edge location in Taipei is the same as that in Hong Kong, Korea and Singapore and the pricing for the edge location in Rio de Janeiro is the same as that in São Paulo.

AWS added Manila in the Philippines, Marseille in France and Warsaw in Poland to its edge location network in December.
