AMD launches server platform for high-density data centres

Platform is based on six-core Opteron processor

AMD has launched its first server platform, which brings together its six-core AMD Opteron processor with a chipset aimed at high-density datacentres.

The new server platform, along with the AMD platform specification, code-named 'Kroner', enables performance, provides the benefits of a unified processor and chipset technology, while furthering energy efficiency, the vendor claimed.

They address the requirements of data centre workloads, the vendor added.

According to the company, the 'Kroner' twin server design specification offers platform elements such as voltage regulation and the ability to remotely set power caps, to help drive down power consumption for hyperscale customers. The platform also offers energy efficiency with a new low-power AMD chipset to meet demands of cloud and dense server environments, the company added.

Unified platforms can improve design efficiency, technology integration and enable enhanced platform features among CPUs, according to AMD. The vendor also said that additional OEMs are expected to incorporate the new AMD server chipset into their systems.

"Our focus is to deliver on the aspects of a server platform that impacts the IT manager, such as improved performance on workloads and virtualization and low power consumption," said Patrick Patla, VP and GM- Server and Embedded Business, AMD. "This new platform and 'Kroner' allow our OEM customers to deliver solutions to solve datacenter problems," he added.
