SAP upgrades flagship ERP suite

Bells and whistles for retailers and telcos.

SAP has updated its flagship ERP suite to improve corporate training and add features for utilities, carriers and retailers.

The German software maker said the so-called "enhancement package" is now shipping.

The new features are part of the second package to be shipped under the upgrade policy that the company unveiled late last year.

At the time, the company said it will no longer ship monolithic product upgrades that force customers to accept every new feature. The new policy lets users select individual features without disrupting the core ERP application backbone.

New options include SAP ERP Human Capital management module and the SAP Enterprise Learning tool, which was jointly developed with Adobe. The latter allows companies to host web-based conferences between a teacher and students in a low-cost virtual classroom.

The updated offering also includes an enhanced version of SAP's ERP Operations software, which helps sales personnel more easily access customer data. The updates also include a new user interface for its travel management tool that officials expect will ease the adoption of the software by users.

The industry-specific features include a master data management module for the retail industry, invoicing and billing features for telecommunications companies, and new CRM capabilities for utilities, the company said.
