Anglo American rolls out Box to 10,000 employees worldwide
Box enables employees to collaborate on sensitive docs from anywhere through the cloud
Mining giant Anglo American has rolled out Box's file-sharing and collaboration platform to 10,000 employees worldwide, suggesting that Box's attempts to attract more large enterprise customers by bolstering its security features are starting to pay dividend.
Box has been ramping up the security of its software recently in a bid to convince businesses that their data is safe in the cloud, with the firm announcing yesterday that it has hired ex-Symantec CEO Enrique Salem as a special advisor to the company.
The company said Anglo American, which mines platinum, diamonds and other stones/metals around the world, chose its cloud-based software so that its users could access and collaborate on business critical documents from anywhere, while meeting IT's requirements for centralised management and security.

The deployment was driven by Anglo American's need for external collaboration, extended content management, mobile access to information and storage for the company’s social platform, Jive.
Box claimed the British registred mining firm will now be able to share critical content externally with mining providers, legal firms and consultants, adding that its employees will be able to access content offline and through their mobile devices – a feature deemed to be particularly important to those working in remote locations without internet access.
The Anglo American Global Solutions Team decided to let Box usage spread organically across multiple business units and in the past six months there has been a 3,000-user adoption rate. The company is now moving on to the next phase of the deployment, which includes getting the company’s 9,000 laptop users in areas with limited internet connectivity, like Africa and Latin America, using Box as a way to synchronise and back up their data for offline access and business continuity.
“Moving to a cloud technology like Box that allows us to centralise all our content and provide a secure, simple and efficient tool for our employees was a natural fit for our company,” said David Heppenstall, CIO at Anglo American.

Anglo American operations and exploration activities span Southern Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and South America.
London-headquartered Box has seen its software adopted by 225,000 businesses around the world since it was founded by 28-year-old Aaron Levie in March 2005. Other global brands using Box include Procter & Gamble, McAfee, Schneider Electric and Pearson.
