ITN has appointed Bevan Gibson as its new chief technology officer (CTO).

Gibson, who is currently head of operations and technology, Sky Creative, at BSkyB, replaces director of technology Keith Cass, who is retiring after 34 years at the media company.

At ITN, Gibson will be responsible for the development of the company's digital media solutions, network infrastructure and workflows. This encompasses every technical aspect of national and international newsgathering for all of ITN's newsrooms and production teams, through to the infrastructure underpinning all of its commercial and support operations.

He will head up a team of 90 technical staff, from broadcast engineers to software developers.

Gibson will join ITN in April as part of the senior management team, and report directly to ITN CEO John Hardie.

During his 10 years at BSkyB, Gibson has been in a number of positions, from head of future technology at Sky News to broadcast engineering specialist in the Broadcast Services division. His major technical achievements at the company include the successful technical launches of Sky News Arabia and Sky News HD. He was also involved in reviews of the newsroom systems.

Prior to Sky, Gibson held roles at videographics company Orad UK, Sydney Olympic Broadcasting Organisation, Nine Network and Seven Network,

Meanwhile, in his long career at ITN, Cass established Channel 5 News' 'state-of-the-art' newsroom and virtual reality studio. He also led the digitisation of the entire ITN archive dating back to 1955.

Cass retires after 13 years as director of technology at ITN, where he established the company's in-house software development team that developed ITN's media content management and workflow system, NeMeSys, which underpins a number of ITN's major contracts and won the IBC Innovation Award for content delivery in 2007.

"Bevan's background is a perfect match to lead us through the next phase of technical innovation and growth at ITN," Cass said.

"He will inherit some of the best technology managers, engineers and support teams in the business."
