Six BCS members make top 100 scientist list

Dame Stephanie Shirley and Nigel Shadbolt among those recognised

Article comments

Six BCS (British Computer Society) members are included in The Science Council's "Top 100 Scientists" list, which aims to highlight the work of scientists and demonstrate the diverse range of scientific careers on offer.

The BCS members on the list include Hermann Hauser, Dame Stephanie "Steve" Shirley, professor Steve Furber, professor Christopher Bishop, professor Dame Wendy Hall, and professor Nigel Shadbolt.

David Clarke MBE, group chief executive officer of BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, said, "It is very pleasing that six of our members have been recognised by the Science Council. This list highlights the different types of skills and challenges a career in science involves.

"I hope this will help encourage more people to enter a career in computing and show that the profession offers a wide variety of rewarding careers which make a significant contribution to the UK's economy."

To identify its list of 100, the Science Council organised a competition around 10 different "types" of scientist roles. The list of 100 has 10 different examples of each of the 10 types, and gives a broad picture of the many different ways people work with science.
