Ruby programmers offered a touch of luxury in Paris

Social activities are going to take centre stage at the conference

Open source Ruby programmers are being offered an elegant conference venue in Paris this May, with the organisers promising that the food will match the "elegant code they produce".

Ruby on Rails, often shortened to Rails, is an open source full-stack web application framework for the Ruby programming language. Ruby is a general-purpose object-oriented programming language that combines syntax inspired by Perl with Smalltalk-like features.

La Conf on the 9 and 10 May will host keynotes from well-known Ruby programmers Chad Fowler, Keavy McMinn, Matt Aimonetti, Yehuda Katz, Steve Klabnik and Amy Hoy, among others.

The conference will take place at the four-star Westin Paris-Vendôme, which is situated between Place Vendôme and the Tuilerie gardens. Built during the reign of Napoleon III, the venue offers 19th century opulence and luxury. It's also an easy stroll to Place de la Concorde, the Louvre, the Opera Garnier, the Grand Palais and other majors sites.

The head chef Gilles Grasteau, said the organisers, will provide gourmet three course lunches with wine using in season ingredients, as a "refreshing change to the manky sandwiches conference delegates usually have to put up with".

Christopher Dell, organiser of La Conf, said: "At most conferences I’ve attended you sit in a sterile amphitheatre waiting for the end of the day so the fun can begin. At La Conf the socialising takes centre stage. We’ve set aside two-hour slots each day to enjoy gourmet meals cooked by an expert chef."

He added: "At EUR 395 the price is actually lower than a ticket for much blander conferences being held elsewhere. We’re expecting a lot of interest when the final tranche of tickets goes on sale this Friday."
