Open source middleware vendor updates OSGi for web services

WSO2 launches Carbon version 3

WSO2, builder of open source software for SOA deployments, is launching version 3.0 of Carbon, its componentised middleware platform based on OSGi technology. A Component Manager tool, providing a point-and-click interface for developers to select from a set of middleware capabilities, is featured. A web Services Dynamic Discovery capability in version 3.0 automates configuration of a project spanning multiple web services endpoints, WSO2 said.

Carbon 3.0 also offers enhanced integration of the WSO2 Governance Registry, for monitoring across large clustered deployments and cloud implementations.

"For too long, enterprise developers have had to adjust their IT projects to the parameters of the middleware software they use," said Sanjiva Weerawarana, WSO2 founder and CEO, in a statement released by the company. "WSO2 Carbon 3.0 puts IT developers in the driver's seat for the first time. Now it's simply a matter of choosing the middleware capabilities required, and Carbon automatically handles the provisioning, no integration required. It is the next step in the evolution of IT application and service deployment."

The common Carbon framework offers management, security, clustering, logging, statistics, tracing, and other capabilities, WSO2 said. A graphical management console is used for deploying and managing services and processes. The company is also announcing new versions of middleware products based on Carbon 3: Web Services Application Server 3.2, Enterprise Service Bus 3.0, Governance Registry 3.5, and Identity Server 3.0.

WSO2 said its platform acts like an Eclipse-like framework for servers. Users can integrate systems and build new processes instead of dealing with boundaries of proprietary middleware platforms, the company said.

WSO 3.0 Carbon middleware products are available as software downloads and as WSO2 Cloud Machines on the Amazon Elastic Computing Cloud, Linux Kernel Virtual Machine, or VMware ESX. Products are offered under Apache Licence 2.0. WSO2 does not charge licence fees but offers service and support.
