Ipswitch goes virtual with MOVEit DMZ Enterprise

As the era of 32-bit computing comes to an end.

Ipswitch has released a new version of its file transfer security and governance solution, MOVEit DMZ Enterprise, and has added support for Microsoft's virtualisation technology, Hyper-V.

Ipswitch's File Transfer division is better known as the developer of the popular FTP (file transfer protocol) software WS_FTP. Back in May last year the company acquired Standard Networks in order to expand its reach in the enterprise space. That deal gained it Standard Networks' MoveIT family of secure file transfer and secure messaging software, which was added to Ipswitch's existing FTP product portfolio.

MOVEit DMZ Enterprise 6.5 is a managed file transfer solution designed for enterprises that have to meet strict security and compliance expectations. Specifically, it is optimised for mission-critical end-to-end encrypted transfer and storage of files and data with global vendors and partners.

MOVEit DMZ Enterprise is a 32-bit application that runs on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (32-bit and 64-bit) and Windows Server 2003 (32-bit and 64-bit).

"It is mostly deployed in high volume, high security environments; typically enterprises who need fixed point of presence on internet, and for end users who need to drop off files that need to be secured," said Jonathan Lampe who was formerly the technology director for Standard Networks, but is now VP of Research & Development for both the WS_FTP and MOVEit product lines.

"We are moving all product lines to platforms that support virtualisation and support 64-bit, as the indications from Microsoft is that the era of 32-bit computing is coming to an end," he said.

"Besides the Hyper-V support, the key feature in version 6.5 is its virtual folders," he told Techworld. Essentially, end users can now utilise virtual folders as a shortcut to link to a folder on the network. Administrators can also implement folders that are shared by multiple users in order to aid efficient file sharing among employees and business partners

According to Lampe, the software has also now been translated to German for that market, and it features enhanced centralisation of administrative control, as admins can now configure MOVEit DMZ to pull a user's home folder directly from LDAP and Active Directory.

It has also tweaked the performance for group admins, with "significant login and logoff speed improvements for group administrators managing a large number of groups."

The new version also has improved SSH Key & SSL certificate management, as programmers can use the MOVEit DMZ or Java API for programmatic SSH key and SSL certificate management. "This API now enables SSH keys and SSL certificates to be automatically imported, added, removed and listed to user accounts," said the company.

According to Lampe there are unlimited price bands for most of DMZ features, but a typical base deployment would cost in the region of $10,000 (£5,930) to $15,000 (£8,890). It will cost more if the client wanted high availability and high resilient deployments.
