Red Hat to demo heavy Oracle processing

Weight of expectation.

Article comments

Red Hat is set to demonstrate heavy Oracle applications running on a virtualised environment at next week's VMWorld. The company also aims to perform a live migration during the demo, claiming to complete the migration much quicker than can any of its competitors.

Brian Stevens, Red Hat's chief technology officer, said that it was apparent after talking to the customers that there was a real need for a virtualisation environment that cope with demanding Oracle workloads. He said that the demo will show that the company will be able to handle data at speeds that none of the company's competitors could match - although he wouldn't be drawn on making comparisons with any particular vendor.

Stevens claimed that Red Hat could offer better performance because of the way that virtualisation was closely tied to the operating system. "We can achieve such high figures because of the work that we did on the kernel in RHEL 5," he said. "It's difficult to achieve full performance without operating system optimisation," he added.

He pointed out that this would constitute an Achilles' heel for VMware which hadn't been able to implement changes to the operating system. "We figured that out and Microsoft has figured that out with Hyper-V and Windows but this is a real problem for VMware," he said.

He claimed that the many users would be excited by the demo. "We released RHEL 5 about 18 months ago and there's always a bit of a gap between a release and users adopting it. We certainly have plenty of interest in this and we've even had people who have signed VMware licences looking to talk to us," he added.
